Atomos enables 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW recording with Fujifilm GFX100
Atomos has announced 12-bit 4K RAW over HDMI recording with the Fujifilm GFX100 and Ninja V 5” HDR monitor-recorder. The Ninja V will record up to 4Kp30 12-bit Apple ProRes RAW video from the GFX100. This makes it the world’s first commercially available medium format RAW video shooting system available to buy.
The look of large format video has recently become very popular. This feel can now be achieved more affordably with the GFX100 and Ninja V. According to Atomos, ‘The resulting images have amazing depth, detail and the maximum latitude for post-production – optimal for HDR finishing or to give greater flexibility in SDR (Rec.709).’

The Ninja V has a 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display and GFX100 users will be able to view the RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats or utilize Fujifilm’s F-Log profile.
As an alternative to RAW the Ninja V can also record 10-bit 422 ProRes and DNx video up to 4kp60 from the HDMI output of the GFX100. ProRes RAW or standard video files are recorded to AtomX SSD mini SATA drives in the Ninja V.
The Ninja V and RAW recording also opens up the camera to the wider Atomos ecosystem for enhanced on-set HDR and SDR monitoring. A video signal can be output from the Ninja V to the Atomos Sumo19, or soon-to-be-released Neon line of production monitors.
You can now capture in ProRes RAW from a large number of manufacturers’ cameras. In recent months we have sen a few cameras receiving firmware updates that allow them to output a RAW signal over HDMI. It is a pity that there are still no cameras available that can record Prores RAW internally. While it is nice to have the ability to record RAW externally, most people would much prefer to do it internally. With Canon’s soon to be officially announced R5 having internal RAW recording, you have to wonder how much longer external recorders will remain relevant.
ProRes RAW is supported in Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, and Grass Valley Edius, along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, and FilmLight Baselight.
The GFX100 and Ninja V will gain the ability to record ProRes RAW at up to 4Kp30 via firmware update 2.00 from Fujifilm and a free AtomOS update from Atomos in July 2020.
The Fujifilm GFX100 certainly isn’t for everyone. At almost $10,000USD it is only going to appeal to a very niche market.
New GVX100 Firmware
Fujifilm has also today released new Ver.2.00 firmware for the GFX100.
Expanding the use of outstanding image technology based on unique color reproduction
1)Addition of the new Film Simulation modes below.
・“CLASSIC Neg” mode, simulating color negative film traditionally chosen for snapshots.
・“ETERNA Bleach Bypass” mode, which simulates the film processing technique of the same name.
2)“Color Chrome Blue” is added, which adds depth to color and tonal reproduction in blue skies and other primarily blue subjects.
3)Additional functions of GRAIN EFFECT (SIZE, ROUGHNESS).
Improving autofocus performance
1)Fast and highly-accurate phase-detection AF even in low-light conditions at -5EV.
2)Improvement of the Face / Eye AF performance.
The face / eye detection accuracy and stability are improved when shooting multiple people, so as to make portrait photography easier than ever before.
3)Auto mode will be added to focus bracketing.
Specify the starting and ending points and shooting interval, and the camera can automatically determine the number of frames and steps required.
Enabling video recording control from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications
Combining the GFX100 with Gimbal / Drone that supports this function, will allow users to start / stop video recording, specify exposure settings for video (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity and exposure compensation), and make manual focus adjustments.(1)

Expanding various other functions requested by customers
1)The firmware will allow users to adjust exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture value, ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation) for still images from a computer when using software that supports some tether-shooting functions.
2)More photo-editing applications will support the import of rating information, assigned in camera.
3)“COMPRESSED” is added to RAW RECORDING.
Features RAW video data output to ATOMOS NINJA V field monitor-recorder(6)
GFX100 will be able to output maximum 4K/29.97P(7) 12bit RAW video data using HDMI to an ATOMOS NINJA V, in Apple ProRes RAW. New firmware for NINJA V will be released by ATOMOS. RAW video data gives maximum flexibility for exposure adjustment or color grading in post-production for professional videographers. Also, simultaneous output of RAW with Film Simulation / F-Log / Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) is also available.
