New Eero 6 and Eero Pro 6 add Wi-Fi 6 and Built-In Smart Home Hub

Having a reliable home internet connection is more important than ever, and Amazon-owned Eero has recognised that with the launch of the Eero 6 and Eero Pro 6.

The company’s new mesh Wi-Fi systems add support for Wi-Fi 6, the latest standard of wireless connectivity. This enables much faster internet speeds, as well as up to 75 devices to be connected simultaneously.

However, Amazon recommends you have a speed of at least 500Mbps to make the most of the Eero 6, while for the Pro 6 its 1Gbps.

The other key upgrade on the Eero 6 range is a built-in Zigbee hub, which allows you to easily control a range of Alexa-enabled smart home tech with your voice. Previously, the hub was only available as an additional accessory.

The big difference between the regular and Pro models is the number of bands it offers. As with its predecessor, the Pro 6 comes with two at 5GHz and another at 2GHz, with the regular model comes with one of each. As such, the Eero 6 has a maximum range of 1,500 sq ft per router, while the Pro extends that to 2,000 sq ft.

Why does it need both? Well, 5GHz Wi-Fi is generally faster than 2.4GHz, but is much less reliable if you’re further away from the router. Having the option for both is designed to allow for the optimum connection wherever you are in the house.

Alongside the Eero 6 and Pro 6, Amazon also launched the cheaper Eero 6 extender, designed to be added to your existing Eero setup. All three new products are compatible with previous generations of Eero hardware.

The Eero 6 and Eero Pro 6 will cost US$129 and US$229 respectively, while the extender will set you back US$89. Pre-orders are live on the Amazon US site ahead of release on 2 November, but international pricing and release information aren’t yet known.

It remains to be seen whether the Eero 6 and Pro 6 can take on the likes of TP-Link and Linksys, which currently occupy the top two spots in our best mesh Wi-Fi chart.
